Poona Bayabao is a 5th class municipality in the province of Lanao del Sur.
Located at the heart of Lanao del Sur Province. It is about 37 kilometer away
from the capital city of Marawi.
To emphasize Poona Bayabao is derived from two Maranao words "Poona" means the
beginning and "Bayabao" denotes ethnical standards. Thus we can say Poona Bayabao
implies the place where the ethnical standard of Maranao people begun. This is
therefore compromise the 3 Royal Sultanate House of Lanao del Sur the Sultanate
House of Rogan, Taporog and Bansayan.
According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 17,390 people in 2,452
households.
Poona Bayabao is politically subdivided into 25 barangays.
The municipality has a clay loam soil type.
The people of Poona Bayabao (Maranaos) is famous of creating and baking giant
food. The Giant Tiatag, is one of the maranao delecacies which only few maranao
can made. Another maranao food "Dodol", is a maranao home made chocolate. Another
is "Paburut", the delicious maranao icing ball. Lastly,"Burua" the maranao cup
cake.
The Municipality enjoyed the priveledge of 24 hours power supply.
The climate is classified as Type IV which is characterized by more or less even
distribution of rainfall throughout the year. Dry season is observed during the
months from January to March and maximum rain period is from May to October.
