Lagangilang is a 5th class municipality in the province of Abra. It is 21 kilometers northwest of the capital town of Bangued. It is bounded on the north by the municipalities of San Juan and Dolores, on the west by the municipality of tayum, on the south by the municipalities of Bucay and Sallapadan, on the east by the municipality of Licuan-Baay and on the southeast by the municipality of Tineg.

With an area of 6,910 has. Lagangilang became the home of 12,073 Tinggiuans and Ilocanos living in 17 barangays and 55 sitios. Legend handed down from generation's say that it's name is derived from "ilang-ilang, a tree whose flowers emit a distinctively sweet smell especially at night. Also a native Tinggiuan warrior named Lagam (meaning brave) once ruled and defended the original village by the eastern bank of Abra River from adversaries. On account of his exploit, his fame spread. From those two (2) roots has been named Lagangilang.

According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 12,073 people in 2,354 households.

Lagangilang is politically subdivided into 17 barangays.

The place climate is characterized by 2 distinct seasons. The dry season, which occurs from November to April, is marked by daily blue skies and clear starry nights and the wet season for the rest of the year with high rainfall intensities accompanied by storms and typhoons.

The municipality of Lagangilang has been endowed with natural attributes. Nestled between rivers and mountains it veritably sprawls amidst a wealthy and abundance of mineral deposits. The town prides itself with a rich history. The cultural heritage of the inhabitants is clearly manifested by the costumes of the people.

Relatively young, Lagangilang first became Municipal District in 1903. In 1908, Lagangilang is but a small settlement of "Tinggiuans" commonly called "Itnegs". This group of people are sturdy, hardworking and very resourceful.

Their means of livelihood consisted of hunting, fishing, weaving, pottery making and steadily in its political, social, economic and religious life. In its strategic location at the Cordillera range and along the bank of Abra River, Lagangilang could not help but became the center of ethnic integration between the tingguians and the ilocanos and of trade, commerce in the eastern part of the province.

With the municipality's land area of 6,910 has., the land distribution is as follows:

The municipality is predominantly forest land with 4,525.5 has. or an equivalent of 65.5% of its total land area. On urban land use, the urban land area of 113.37 has. is clasified as follows: residential - 8.6 has., commercial - 3.75 has., institutional - 5.77 has., agricultural - 90.5 has., and parks and open spaces - 4.75 has.
