Mankayan is a 4th class municipality in the province of Benguet. "Mankayan" is from the Hispanized "Nancayan," from a native term for the place, "Nangkayang" which means "high up in the mountain." It has a total land area of 17,514.50 hectares and is about 99 km. north of Baguio City. It is bounded on the north by Cervantes, Ilocos Sur, on the east by Tadian, Mountain Provice and Buguias, Benguet and on the south by Bakun, Benguet.

According to the 2000 census, it has a population of people 34,502 in 6,495 households.

Mankayan is politically subdivided into 12 barangays.

Mankayan has a tropical climate and 2 seasons - the wet and the dry. The wet or rainy season starts on the months of May tp October while the rest of the year are dry.
